Our goals include creating economic growth from the commercial development of natural resources within the Simpcw’ulécw (Simpcw Territory) by being the primary contractor and competing for work in the public and private sectors.
WHAT’S THE JOB?
Simpcw Resources LLP is looking for an experienced Senior Wildlife Biologist to join the company’s growing Environmental team focused on providing professional environmental services balancing environmental protection and development within the Simpcw Territory. The Senior Wildlife Biologist will participate in wildlife projects and programs, including study design, mitigation planning, technical reporting, permitting and leading environmental field programs. Working with the Environment Project Manager, the Senior Wildlife Biologist will join a growing team of environment professionals at SRLLP and collaborate with Simpcw First Nation and our many partners to undertake multidisciplinary field programs for private sector clients and government agencies.
WHAT YOU DO?
- Develop, lead, manage and support project teams in the execution of wildlife and wildlife habitat related field programs (e.g., breeding bird nest sweeps, species at risk surveys, amphibian survey and salvage, mountain caribou monitoring and habitat restoration, eDNA sampling and analysis);
- Demonstrating a leadership role, mentoring and supporting junior and intermediate wildlife biologists, and providing technical direction to field and office staff;
- Working closely with clients, regulators and stakeholders providing technical guidance on wildlife and wildlife habitat management (e.g., permitting, assessment, mitigation, monitoring);
- Developing, managing, and implementing wildlife components of projects, such as species and habitat inventories, environmental assessments, management and monitoring plans, compliance reports, and permit applications.
- Providing technical advice relating to natural science and biology on multidisciplinary projects.
- Coordinating and tracking of assignments, scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables;
- Assisting with proposal writing and business development;
- Promoting a solid health and safety culture and actively participating in SRLLP’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program;
- Advancing assignments/projects that require critical thinking and technical knowledge.
- Demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Planning and undertaking assignments/projects, independently or as part of a team, have a broad scope or complexity.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- Bachelor or graduate degree in biology or a related discipline from a recognized university
- Is a Registered Professional Biologist in good standing with British Columbia college of Applied Biology
- Minimum 8-10 years experience as a wildlife biologist with relevant consulting experience
- Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation and regulations relating to wildlife and wildlife habitat
- Able to develop and manage field programs for wildlife and wildlife habitat
- Experience leading wildlife field studies, surveys, and assessments in alignment with relevant protocols, guidelines, and industry best practices, across one or more specializations (e.g., birds, amphibians, large mammals)
- Proficient technical writing skills and experience preparing and coordinating mitigation, management, and monitoring plans
- Proficient use of field equipment and instruments such as GPS, Arc GIS Field Maps, call play-back, remote cameras, various sampling, and salvage equipment.
- Experience working in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork, and a willingness to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations
- Comfortable with autonomy while able to work collaboratively with others
- Problem-solver, able to make decisions based on sound judgement and consultation
- Strong interpersonal and social skills with the ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/technical backgrounds, including internal and external clients, regulatory agencies, and Indigenous groups, both public and private sector
- Valid drivers license and clean abstract
